The Arenal Volcano - Rumbles and Grumbles Amid Nature's Light Show

Costa Rica is the home of the Arenal Volcano, which spews on a daily basis. The volcano became active again in 1968 after hundreds of years of lying dormant. Many people are fascinated by this natural occurrence and travel to Costa Rica to observe the volcano and to enjoy other fascinating aspects of the Costa Rican environment. This country is one of the most stable Central American countries in that section of the world. The volcano has opened up a tourist industry that has given this area an economic boost. Tourists come to watch the super heated rocks bursting into the cooler air and explode into a spray of fire and ash. Nature is providing a natural light show that is fascinating to watch and photograph. The increase of the nutrients and minerals that enrich this area's soil creates some of the most fertile soil on earth.

It is possible to view the volcano from different perspectives in a variety of ways. There is a fantastic horseback tour that takes you to the slopes of the volcano on a historic trail that was used by Spanish pioneers that settled the region. The ride takes you on a journey that crosses rivers and stunning landscapes. One of the most interesting stops on the trip is the lookout point that allows you to see the old lava from eruptions that occurred in the past.

If your interests lie in the area of bird watching, Costa Rica is home to a brilliant display of birds. These beauties are a true delight to the avid bird watcher. The birds are best observed at dawn and dusk of the day. Experienced guided tours take you right to where the birds nest and gather food on the slopes of Arenal Volcano. Some of the birds that will be seen are tangaras, toucans, hacks and tanagers. There are many more native birds that will fascinate those that love watching the feathered friends. The Clay Robin is the national bird of Costa Rica due to the beauty of the songs the birds sing.

The volcano has brought small business a long way in the area. Volcano viewing, nature tours, cruises and fresh fishing excursions are activities that have been built up into businesses due to the eruption of the volcano, and its continued activity simply adds to the excitement and thrill of being so close to a part of nature that is unpredictable and volatile. The fresh fishing that is available in Arenal Lake is some of the finest in Central America. One of the prize catches is the trophy sized Rainbow Bass.

The geographic history of the volcano is information many know about because of the modern day eruptions that have changed the face of the landscape and actually covered two villages in hot lava, making the villages unsafe to live in. Many people lost their lives when this volcano rumbled and grumbled and blew its top. Natives in the area have the philosophy that this is part of the price they pay to live in an area that is as close to paradise as you can get. They revere and respect the Arenal Volcano and are proud that this is a part of their heritage.
