Hiking New Zealand's North Island - The Tongariro Northern Circuit

Because New Zealand is known for having the world's most beautiful and dramatic scenery, one would think the world's most spectacular hikes might be hidden in these mountainous islands. Many hikers stick to the Tongariro Alpine crossing, which is only a one day hike. The two night, three day Tongariro northern circuit offers a much more scenic and satisfying experience.

The Tongariro Northern Circuit is 35 kilometers of continuously compelling nature. The volcanoes and deserts will transport you to another planet with its high mountain peaks, striking vistas, and wide variety of unique scenery. Hikers will traverse Mt. Ngaurube, an active volcano and the location of Mount Doom in the LORD OF THE RINGS films, and explore boiling mud pools, amazing water-filled volcanic vents, interesting lava features, craters, the Emerald Lakes, and glacial valleys. Along the trail, four cozy alpine huts (Mangatepopo, Ketetahi, Oturere and Waihohonu) with nice beds, gas stoves and heat, running water, and flushing toilets are available to be occupied, but hikers must pay for their hut stays in advance. Short side hikes to the peeks of Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe offer incredible views.

The best time to hike the bleak, harsh volcanic landscape of the Tongariro Northern Circuit is during the summer months from from October 1st to April 30th. During the winter season, mountaineering equipment is required to hike the trail, as it can become quite arduous. It is recommended that people hike this trail during times of excellent weather conditions to enjoy the experience to the fullest extent possible.
